Delayed free recovery in a rubberlike liquid after steady shear flow

Summary

A rubberlike liquid (defined by [1], [3]) is subjected to a uniform steady shear flow at shear rateG from timet=−∞ tot=t ₁; the stress is zero fort ⩾t ₁. The shape is calculated as a function oft fort >t ₁ by numerical methods for various values ofG and of the parametersa, l in the memory function [3]. Inertial forces are neglected. The recovery is found to be of the type shown in fig. 1 with equal lateral expansionsh ₂,e ₃ and a shear all of which increase steadily with time; most of the recovery occurs discontinuously att=t ₁. The shear recovery angleε does not exceed 45‡.

Zusammenfassung

Eine gummiartige Flüssigkeit (definiert gemäß [1], [3]) wird einer homogenen stationären Scherströmung vom GeschwindigkeitsgefälleG von der Zeitt=−∞ bist=t ₁ unterworfen. Die Spannung ist Null fürt ⩾t ₁. Die Form wird als Funktion vont fürt >t ₁ mit Hilfe numerischer Methoden für verschiedene Werte vonG und des Parametersa, l in der Erinnerungsfunktion [3] berechnet. Trägheitskräfte werden vernachlässigt. Die Erholung ergibt sich als von der in Abb. 1 dargestellten Art mit gleichen seitlichen Ausdehnungenh ₂,e ₃ und einem Schub; sie erhöhen sich insgesamt gleichmäßig mit der Zeit. Die hauptsächliche Erholung findet mit Unterbrechungen beit=t ₁ statt. Der Schuberholungswinkelε übersteigt nicht 45‡.
