Normal stress effects in aqueous detergent solutions

Rheologica Acta Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The rheological properties of a typical viscous isotropic detergent solution were investigated in steady shearing flow. The aqueous solution contained 10% of a highly soluble anionic detergent and varying amounts of sodium nitrate to produce visco-elastic behaviour. Normal stress differences were measured in the concentric cylinder and in the cone-and-plate configuration. Although the sign of the normal stress difference (S 11S 22) is opposite to that found in most other materials, the liquid climbs up at the inner cylinder due to the contribution from (S 22S 33).
