Functional upper eyelid anatomy as applied to aesthetic blepharoplasty

Abstract

The paper reviews significant anatomic details of the upper eyelid important in performing upper lid aesthetic blepharoplasty. Included are descriptions of the obicularis oculi muscle, the preaponeurotic fat pads, the lateral fat pad, and the lacrimal gland. Current concepts regarding the insertion of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle and its role in creating the upper lid sulcus and fold are discussed. Application of these anatomic considerations in performing upper lid aesthetic blepharoplasty is suggested.
