Summary
From the theory of the streaming birefringence of solutions of ideally flexible random macromolecular coils with constant hydrodynamic interaction expressions containing rheo-optical and rheological data were deduced. These expressions should be independent of molecular weight and concentration of solute, of velocity gradient and solvent viscosity. Experiments were performed on high molecular weight polystyrene in highly viscous solvent-Aroclor. The stress-optical coefficient is found to be true molecular constant, while the other expressions are dependent on concentration and on gradient parameterβ *. The discrepancies are explained as a result of change of the hydrodynamic interaction with the deformation of macromolecular coil.
