Abstract

Anpheles atroparvus, a petential vector of human plasmodia and arboviruses, is widespread over the lowlands of Serbia and Macedonia. The species is conspicuously dominant only in the areas with saline and alkaline soils of the Pannonian Plain, and in a widely separated and limited saline area which is located west of Niš in Serbia. This is due to the relatively high concentration of dissolved salts in stagnant and slowly flowing water of such areas.A. atroparvus is a rare or extremely rare species in Macedonia, which is probably associated with the very hot and dry summers experienced in this area. Two other sibling species of themaculipennis complex are to be found in Serbia and Macedonia.A. messeae is an abundant and dominant species in the alluvial plain of the large rivers Danube and Sava, and the low river Morava in Serbia.A. maculipennis s. str. is the predominant species in the hilly area of Serbia and in the lowlands of the south Serbia and Macedonia.
