Algol-Genius, a programming language for general data processing

  • Börje Langefors
Article

Abstract

The similarity of requirements on a programming language for engineering data processing on one hand and for business data processing on the other and the advantage, therefore, of having a common language for both, is pointed out.

A realization of such a common language, using ALGOL for the procedures and a COBOL-like language for the data handling, has been made. It is called Algol-Genius. Genius is the data handling part. A brief description of the functioning of Genius and its coordination with Algol is given. Some of the functions of Algol-Genius, corresponding roughly to Cobol verbs, are presented as an illustration. A brief account of the planning of the project and its implementation is also given.
