Summary
The mechanism of antifungal action of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (lawsone) isolated from leaves ofLawsonia inermis was studied. It was found to inhibit nitrate reductase activity in vivo and in vitro. The concentration which inhibited in vivo enzyme activity also reduced ethanol-soluble and ethanol-insoluble nitrogen (protein nitrogen) content in the test organism,Helminthosporium oryzae.
