Abstract

This paper is concerned with the problem of curve-fitting. A variational criterion for curve-fitting is put forward. The criterion takes the form of an isoperimetric problem. A method for determining the Lagrange multiplier involved is suggested. It is pointed out that an interesting physical analogue of the method exists.

It should be mentioned that the method involves a rather large amount of numerical calculation.
