Summary
On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence, the structureIV has been assigned to Axisonitrile-4, an axane-sesquiterpenoid isonitrile, isolated from the spongeAxinella cannabina; in the same organism have been also found Axisothiocyanate-4 (V) and Axammide-4 (VI).

Mass spectra and accurate mass measurements were obtained with an AEI MS 902 spectrometer by using the direct inlet technique.
IR spectra were recorded on a Perkin-Elmer 157 instrument in CCl4.
NMR spectra were taken in CCl4 on a Perkin-Elmer R 32 apparatus (internal reference TMS); s denotes a singlet, d a doublet, m a multiplet, broad.
GLC's were run using a Perkin-Elmer F 30 instrument with glass column 2m×0.4 cm, on 2.5% SE30.
