Zusammenfassung
Normalbuttersäure und β-Oxybuttersäure haben unabhängig von ihrem Säurecharakter (ebenso wie die Normalvaleriansäure) am normalen und vergifteten Tier eine intensive erregende Wirkung auf das Atemzentrum; sie rufen eine langsame, tiefe Atmung hervor, die weitgehende Ähnlichkeit mit der großen Kussmaulschen Atmung beim Diabetes mellitus hat. Die Salze der Azetessigsäure, der Isobuttersäure und Propionsäure sind unwirksan.
