Summary
The use of market data as input for advanced statistical procedures often leads to results which contradict to theoretical expectations and/or practical experience. A main reason for these shortcomings is seen in the typical shortness of (non-experimental) marketing-data. In such a case it would be wasteful to neglect any piece of information beyond the mere data history. Bayesian inference offers an efficient facility of formally taking into account external information. In the first part of this paper the necessary tools are presented which will enable us to combine the prior knowledge about the parameters of a market model with the information gathered from sample observations. In the empirical part an application is discussed. It demonstrates that incorporation of appropriately chosen prior information is likely to yield more acceptable and reliable results compared with the traditional approach.
