Summary
The time dependent solution is determined for the state probabilities and for some characteristic values of queuing systems with a single server, an infinite number of waiting places, exponentially distributed inter-arrival and service times, and any initial state. The state probabilitiesP v (τ), i.e. the probabilities forν units in the system at timeτ, are given in the form of integrals in which modifiedBessel functions of the first kind occur. Integrating the state probalityP 0(τ) overτ leads to the meanL(τ) and the varianceV(τ) of the numberν of units in the system.
Forϱ<1 andτ→∞ the systems tend to a steady state (for which the solution is known); forϱ≥1 andτ→∞ we haveP v (τ)→0 for allν, L(τ)→∞,V(τ)→∞.
Ifϱ>1 asymptotic expansions for largeτ are found givingL(τ) andV(τ) proportional toτ. Ifϱ=1 simple approximate formulas for largeτ are obtained givingL(τ) and the standard deviationσ(τ) proportional to\(\sqrt \tau \).
