Summary

  1. 1.

Seeds ofVicia faba minor are damaged by drying them over CaCl2 at 20° to water contents below about 9%. The damage is shown by a slowing down of germination and a reduction of shoot and root length measured at the 11th. or 12th day of growth.

  2. 2.

Arranging the growth data in classes according to shoot and root length results in a normal distribution for those from medium water content seeds and a bimodal distribution for those from dry seeds.

  3. 3.

Seeds which had been dried and brought back to medium water content by storing them in the room, produced normal seedlings closely corresponding to the controls.

  4. 4.

No chromosome damage was observed in seedlings grown from dry seeds.

  5. 5.

Water uptake in dry beans is more rapid during the first 24 hours of soaking than in beans of medium water content. This, seen in combination with point 3, suggests that the observed damage may be caused by the abnormally rapid water uptake of the dried embryo during the early soaking period.
