Abstract
In many ambrosia beetles (wood boring Scolytidae and all Platypodidae) a special fungus transmitting organ, the mycetangium, ensures fungus survival during hibernation and/or flight as well as the inoculation of new galleries. Fatty nutritional and probably selective sheltering fluids are secreted by holocrinous gland cells connected with the mycetangium during the growth of funguis inside this organ and only then. Consequently, tolerance levels of true ambrosia fungi towards climatic conditions are narrowed down compared with other auxiliary or free blue stain fungi. Survival and proparation is dependent on the insect partner, while the ambrosia beetles depend on their microsymbionts for their nutrition. The ambrosia symbiosis has developed independently in the differen axonomic groups. Adaptations to the different ecological requisitions of the beetle results in a great variability of symbiotic patterns.
