Conclusions
The median NEFA content as determined in normoxic dog myocardium through biopsies was 25 nmol·g−1 wet weight of tissue, a value similar to the one calculated from the NEFA concentrations in the various myocardial compartments as described in literature (13, 14). The calculated intracellular concentration in the myocyt was found to be about 10 μmol·1−1. This value is of the same order of magnitude as the Km of specific NEFA binding proteins and of the fatty acid activating enzym. Besides, the calculated intracellular NEFA concentration is lower than the NEFA concentration which in vitro inhibits glycolytic enzymes or activates mitochondrial ATP-ase activity. These considerations indicate that the myocardial NEFA content found in the present study, which is significantly lower than that described in literature, is compatible with the normal function of normoxic dog myocardium.
