Effect of cigarette smoking upon the finger circulation in normal and diabetic subjects

Summary

The basal finger blood flow and the reaction to cigarette smoking was studied among diabetic patients with neuropathy and non-diabetic controls. Both the basal blood flow and the reaction to cigarette smoking were lower among diabetics. The diminution of the basal blood flow was believed to be secondary to the diabetic micronagiopathy. The absence of vasoconstriction was attributed to a blockade of the neurologic mechanism involved. The site of the blockade remains open.

Zusammenfassung

Mit Hilfe der digitalen Venenverschlußplethysmographie wurde die Durchblutung der Finger während des Rauchens gemessen. Untersucht wurden 20 normale Versuchspersonen und 10 Diabetiker mitklinischer Neuropathie. Die Ruhedurchblutung war bei den Diabetikern stark herabgesetzt im Vergleich zu den Nichtdiabetikern. Unter Nikotin-Streß reagierten alle Normalpersonen mit einer deutlichen Abnahme der Fingerdurchblutung. Bei 4 der Diabetiker blieb die Druchblutung unverändert, bei den übrigen 6 fiel die Reaktion eindeutig geringer aus als bei den gesunden Versuchspersonen. Diese Ergebnisse sprechen dafür, daß bei den Diabetikern mit Neuropathie eine Blockade sympathischer Nervenimpulse besteht. Der genaue Ort dieser Blockade bleibt offen.
