Abstract
Compared with most crops, cotton is remarkable for its length of land occupancy, often 10 months from sowing to final harvest. The change from mainly rain-grown to almost entirely irrigated culture and the resultant intensification of production has dramatically increased the occurrence and importance of insect pests and consequently research into methods of their control.
In recent times concern has been expressed as to the long term effects of a chemical programme of control. Events of the past decade clearly show, that the major factor responsible for the change in status of pests of cotton is the biological upset resulting from decimation of predator and parasite populations by the synthetic organic insecticides. New control techniques with much less reliance on chemicals are being developed. These methods are being incorporated into pest management systems in which the emphasis is on management rather than total control of cotton pests.
