Summary
-
1.
AtAcetabularia, already in darkness a strong apical-basal gradient of regenerating capacity is formed and maintained in the presence of the nucleus.
-
2.
After elimination of the nucleus, the fall equalizes, if the enucleated parts remain in darkness for some days before reillumination. The same happens with darkened enucleated parts of plants, which are brought up on normal light conditions.
-
3.
The experiments confirm the former conclusion, that inAcetabularia the concentration gradient of the “morphogenetic substances” is not fixed by an asymmetrical structure of the cytoplasm.
