Summary
Osmotic arousal of thirst was studied in rats by measuring additional water intake for 2 h after i.v. infection of hyperosmolar solutions. NaCl and Mannitol induced a rapid and large water intake; urea and fructose were half as effective; glucose was practically ineffective though it increased plasma osmolarity. In desert rats, hyperosmotic solutions did not induce any drinking.
