Gli autori hanno studiato l'azione della luce sulla stabilità della bilirubina in soluzione alcalina e in soluzione cloroformica. Viene proposto, in via generate, un meccanismo del primo ordine per la trasformazione della bilirubina in pigmenti verdinoidi, sia per le soluzioni irradiate, sia per quelle conservate al buio.
