Summary

It is shown that the murein of 2 strains ofS. ventriculi andS. maxima containsLl-diaminopimelic acid. The interpeptid bridge consists of one glycine residue. This murein type occurs also in propionibacteria, some arthrobacter, clostridia and streptomycetes. It is not found in any micrococci or aerobic sarcina. This is an additional evidence that the anaerobic sarcina species have to be completely separated from the aerobic packet-forming cocci. The latter should not be included in the genus Sarcina.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird gezeight, daß das Murein von 2 Stämmen vonS. ventriculi undS. maxima Ll-Diaminopimelinsäure enthält. Die Interpeptidbrücke zwischen den Peptiduntereinheiten besteht aus einem Molekül Glycin. Dieser Mureintyp wurde bisher auch in Propionsäurebakterien sowie bei einigen Vertretern der Gattungen Arthrobacter, Clostridium und Streptomyces gefunden, dagegen nicht in irgendwelchen Arten der Mikrokokken oder der aeroben Sarcinen. Dieser Befund ist ein weiterer Hinweis darauf, daß die anaeroben Sarcinen vollständig von den aeroben, paketeformenden Mikrokokken getrennt werden müssen. Die Gattung Sarcina sollte nur den anaeroben Arten vorbehalten sein.
