Summary
In two seperate investigations applying pharmacological experiments of short duration, it was tried to influence symptoms of hyperactivity of the sympathetic system in cases of hypertensive regulatory disorders.
At first the effect of Methacholine, a parasympathomimetic drug, was studied, thereafter the two beta-receptor blocking agents Propranolol and Alprenolol. In both series of experiments 24 healthy students were examined. The results were tested by an analysis of variance.
The increase of blood pressure caused by emotional stress could be influenced by Methacholine, whereas both beta-receptor blocking drugs were unable to do so. Emotionally evoked tachycardia responded very well to beta-receptor blocking agents, whereas Methacholine was completely without effect.
In order to influence hypertensive regulatory disorders one needs a substance, however, which overcomes both, the elevated blood pressure and the tachycardia.
After injection of 10 mg Methacholine s.c., the heart rate seems to indicate the actual degree of excitation of the hypothalamic sympathetic center.
Oral application of 150 mg Alprenolol did not suppress sympathetic activity, as intensively as 80 mg Propranolol p.o. By observing the muscle tone it is concluded that the sympathetic center is stimulated by beta-receptor blocking agents.
