Summary

5 mg of hexadimethrine bromide (Polybrene, Abbott) given intravenously causes a significant increase in the number of eosinophilic leucocytes in rats. Eosinopenia due to adrenaline, nicotine, insuline and prednisolone, is not only inhibited by the substance but even in such circumstances hexadimethrine bromide induces a considerable eosinophilic cell increase. Pentobarbital narcosis, pretreatment with compound 48/80, or destruction of the bone marrow by administration of Nitrogen Lost do not inhibit the eosinophilic effect of hexadimethrine bromide. The mechanism through which hexadimethrine bromide causes an increase in the number of the eosinophilic leucocytes is still unknown.
