Summary
A sled which is mounted on a railroad track and operated through a drop weight is discussed in this paper. The sled (occupied by a cadaver) is accelerated by a eightfold gear transmission ratio through a drop weight until it reaches a desired crash velocity (max. 100 km/hr). The kinetic energy is transformed according to the deflection of the brake and therefore the deceleration of the sled can be adjusted. The time characteristic of the sled deceleration is that of a trapezium. By means of a formula it is possible to determine the length of the deceleration with a known mass-ratio (moving mass: falling mass) and the efficiency of a known impact velocity. According to the mounting direction of a seat, the sled may simulate frontal crashes, crashes on both sides and rear crashes. With different installations it is also possible to accomplish manifold tests with various parts of the human body.
