Abstract
This article is a description of the use of the Soil Conservation Service's land evaluation and site assessment (LESA) system by Latah County, Idaho, USA. It provides an example of adapting the system to a diverse, rural area by a lay planning commission utilizing the services of professional planners and soil conservationists. The resulting emphasis on a design that reflects local values and planning policies is discussed. Sample applications of this county's method of rating site suitability for agriculture are provided.
