Summary
Liver cancer in rainbow trout had been described from fishfarms in USA since 1938. Many times the loss on fish has been very high (80–100%). One could see, that only fishes fell ill, which did eat artificial composed dry food (pellets). Other fishes from the same fishfarm fed with fresh sheep liver, had been in good health. 1963 one could find that aflatoxines caused the liver cancer and that cotton seed covered withAspergillus flavus was responsible for the damage. If cotton seeds were removed from this dry food, there was no cancer. Liver cancer on the rainbow trout had also been described in England, France, Italy, Japan and Danmark.
1968 the first case of liver cancer in rainbow trout had been described in Western Germany. A special kind of food for spawners of these fishes has been composed of cotton seeds, peanuts and sunflower seeds. During this time (1965 and later) in Western Germany nobody knew anything about aflatoxin and there was no food controll in this direction. Only in two cases bigger losses on fishes (60–80%) on young spawners not yet sexually developed had been observed. Males and females fell ill in the same proportion. Big mature males of the rainbow trout have been completely resistant. Big mature females dit fall ill in low percentage (0,1–5%). Fishes from the same fishfarm could be controlled during 4 years. The tumors dit grow: 1st year 1–2 cm, 2nd year 3–4 cm, 3rd year 5–7 cm, 4th year 10–11 cm diameter. The liver tit grow up to 8 times of the normal weight and more, (liver regeneration). Different defense reactions of the rainbow trout against cancer are demonstrated. They are: regeneration, superregeneration, building of a cover from connective tissue on the surface of the tumor, blood coagulation (haematom) in the tumor, suppuration, and secernation of watery fluid without any cancercells. Different figures show the degeneration of a tumor to a big cyst filled with water. The biggest cyst had a diameter of 10 to 11 cm. In an extrem case the weight of a magnificated liver with two big cysts has been more than 1100 g, this is 1/3 of the body weight of the fish. After removing of dangerous components of the food in Western Germany there is no more cancer in the liver of the rainbow trout.
It is demonstrated there, that the bigger trouts will be resistant. But the smaller ones (fingerlings) are very sensitive and can be used for the test of aflatoxin.
