Summary
The effect of X-rays on synthesis of PAL in 22 hour-incubated slices of tuber parenchyma has been studied in the varieties Sieglinde, Hansa, Saturna, and Tasso. In the variety Sieglinde a nearly linear decrease of PAL-activity with increasing doses of irradiation has been found. During a storage period of 3 months the PAL-activity decreases in irradiated and unirradiated tissue. The extend of PAL-synthesis depends on variety, duration of storage, irradiation dose and shows a high biological variation among potatoes treated in the same manner. The identification of irradiated potatoes seems to be possible after a dose of at least 15 krads if enough replicates are used and compared with controls.
