Summary
-
1.
Cross-circulation experiments are performed on conscious rats with a previously described technique. The blood volume of the donor animal is raised by injecting 3–3.5 ml of rat blood (20–25% of blood volume) within 10 sec intracavally during cross-exchange. The same volume is withdrawn after 8–12 min. Diuresis and electrolyte excretion in both rats are measured. The electrolyte elimination in the receptor rat is continuously recorded by a special method using a small flow-through conductivity cell. In some experiments the blood to be injected is equilibrated with that of the experimental animals.
-
2.
The excretion of sodium in the donor rat increases by a factor of up to 18 within 10 min of blood volume expansion, whereas the electrolyte elimination in the receptor does not change by more than 30%. Out of 6 receptor animals showing statistically significant changes of electrolyte excretion 3 showed an increase and 3 a decrease. In 7 other experiments there was no significant change.
-
3.
Statistically significant changes of electrolyte excretion are due to spontaneous changes during relatively short periods of time.
-
4.
The results have brought no evidence of humoral transmission of saluretic states in rats under the conditions described. Previous experiments under identical conditions, but with blood volumedecreases of far lesser duration (< 1 min) have demonstrated very large quantities of the antidiuretic hormone.

1.
