Abstract
The summit of one of the late eruptive centres of Mount Etna is formed by the rests of an eruptive breccia, composed of lava-blocks cimented by crystal fragments, joined by tridymite crystals. The lava-blocks and the underlying lavaflows have an alcaline andesite composition, subsatured in SiO2. The tridymite cannot be explained as a final crystallization product. This breccia is a clastolava produced by the simultaneous eruption of two liquids: the normal magmatic liquid of Etna volcano and a siliceous liquid, coming from the local fusion of arenaceous rocks of the basement at the contact with the magma. This eruption has the characteristics of a little “nuée ardente”, with lava-fragments and crystals in suspension in a cloud formed by gases rich in SiO2. This cloud disturbed the underlying flow, which was still liquid. During the cooling of the siliceous gases, the tridymite was formed and cemented the constituents of the breccia.
