Summary
The clinical study, based on 846 cases of hallux valgus, showed an association with hammer-toes in 36% and with plantar callosities in half the cases, with marked predominance at the head of the 2nd metatarsal. Though the presence of a bursitis was noted in 75% of the series, this was rarely the reason for the consultation. Pain of varying severity was felt over the bunion in 95.8% and at the metatarsal heads in 55%. Difficult in walking and, even more, in putting on shoes (98.5%) were the chief reasons for seeking operation, far more than the cosmetic appearance. Finally, the duration of the deformity frequently exceeded 5 years.
