Electrolytes and lipid disturbances in chronic intoxication with nitrogen oxides

Summary

Guinea pigs were exposed over a long time period to a low concentration of nitrogen oxides and the products of nitrogen oxides reacting with ammonia. Chronic exposure caused a decrease in cholesterol and total lipid level in the blood serum. Cholesterol and phospholipids are the components of the cell membrane. Changes in cell permeability resulted in the oxidation of lipids in the cell membranes. A displacement of ions and edema of liver mitochondria was observed. A decrease of magnesium and zinc in the liver and brain was observed with a simultaneous increase of magnesium excretion in the urine. Reaction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia diminished essentially lipid and electrolytic disturbances.
