Summary

In 53 patients with benign or malignant disease of the pancreas, direct ultrasound imaging of the pancreas was performed during the operative procedure. Benign lesions could be distinguished from malignant lesions by the changes in ultrasound patterns. Fine-needle aspiration cytology monitored via sonography can help further to reduce the incidence of false-negative intraoperative cytology and can exercise a decisive influence on the surgical procedure by intraoperative sonographymonitored staging.
