Summary
Under normal conditions the variation coefficient of the haemoglobin content of a population of normal erythrocytes, as determined with a scanning and integrating cytophotometer is about 10–16%. The reproducibility of a single estimation lies within 99%. An indication of a systematical sexual dimorphism in the haemoglobin content of individual erythrocytes from twins of different sex has been observed, though the result is non-significant at the 5% or 10% level.
In a young patient with severe hypochromic anemia the shift of the haemoglobin content of the erythrocytes following treatment towards a distribution falling within normal limits has been followed in detail with microphotometric data. It can be shown that from the start of therapy with oral iron, virtually only erythrocytes with a normal amount of haemoglobin are formed. The projection areas of hypochromic erythrocytes decrease with the age of the cells. To a certain extent the same phenomenon could be observed with the erythrocytes with a high haemoglobin content, formed after beginning the treatment.
