Summary
The oxygen uptake and the CO2 production of human cerebral tissue and brain tumours was estimated by the Warburg method. The material consisted of 104 specimens of tissue which had been obtained from a series of 66 patients undergoing operations for intracranial lesions.
On the basis of the results obtained, the hypothesis seems justified that cells of brain tumours have developed a fermentation metabolism. The respiratory values, and the Respiratory Quotients calculated from them, seem to be related to normal and neoplastic tissues, each in a characteristic way.
