Summary

The tongue-like accessory lobe of the liver (Riedel's lobe) that is related to the inferior portion of the right hepatic lobe is a common finding on nuclear medicine imaging of the liver and has been observed principally in females. In a sampling of liver images in 564 consecutive patients that included 319 females and 245 males, the authors found the evidence of Riedel's lobe to be 19.4% in females and 6.1% in males. It is surprising that there is little or no mention of this accessory lobe in some of the leading textbooks of anatomy. It may be that the possible frequent incidence of Riedel's lobe of the liver as an anatomical variant has not been emphasized in the past because gross anatomic information may not have been collected from a sufficient number of females.
