Anatomical bases of thoracic drainage via the first intercostal space

Summary

One hundred thoracic drains were installed in fifty cadavers via the first anterior intercostal space according to precise anatomical landmarks. Study of the thoracic region demonstrated the reliability of these landmarks and the absence of parietal injury with this type of drainage. The results of this study allow to conclude that anterior drainage via the first intercostal space carries a lesser risk of injury to the structures of the pulmonary hilus compared to drainage through the second intercostal space.
