Abstract
Emf change calculation based on the gradient analysis of a metal-clad platinum thermocouple, which was more than 200 ‡C in error after use for 1400 hours at 1450 ‡C, was effected. It has been shown that the resulting value differs considerably from the error of this thermocouple determined experimentally by Selman and Rushforth. It follows that instabilities caused by the rhodium migration are of less significance than has been thought and that internal reactions causing the metal-clad platinum thermocouples instabilities, when operating at high temperatures for long periods, have not yet been sufficiently explained.
