Summary
Rats were fed up to 190 days with a protein poor diet containing 0.07% DMAB, and their livers were studied electron-microscopically. As in cirrhosis as in carcinoma the primary proliferating cell is of ductal origin; that is, it resembles a cell type which forms normally the cholangioles, ductules, or the smaller or larger bile ducts. Most striking are the formation of large, vesicular cytoplasmic evaginations from the microvilli, and the occurrence of mucus cells. A formal genesis of the cholangiocellular carcinoma from the parenchymal cells must be rejected.
