Summary

Variations in density in the basaltic layer and the upper mantle are postulated as being due to mineral conversions as result of high temperature and pressure variations. This theory has been developed in order to explain the elevation of mountain chains, median ocean rises and deep sea trenches as being caused by compressional and tensional stressfields.
