Summary
50 in-patients with massive infections of the urinary tract, based on predominantly obstructive urological diseases, were treated with the cephalosporin derivative, cephacetrile, in a daily dose of 2 × 2 g i.v. for 5–15 days. The results of the treatment were clinically controlled, and objectivised by bacteriological urine tests before and after treatment. The treatment was successful in 47 patients (94%). In 36 patients (72%) the urine was sterile following therapy with cephacetrile; in 42 patients (84%) the primary pathogen was eliminated. No nephrotoxic symptoms or effects on the blood picture and liver function values were observed. In only one case was allergic exanthema observed which rapidly abated after treatment with the medicament was stopped. A particularly effective cephalosporin derivative is thus available in the form of cephacetrile.
