Summary

The effect of cephacetrile in combination with four aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin, sisomicin, tobramycin) was tested by means of the checkerboard dilution technique with 20 strains each of Klebsiella pneumoniae (various K-types), E. coli (various O-types), indole-positive Proteus and enterococci. 68% of the strains reacted indifferently; in 16% an additive inhibitory effect was observed, and in a further 16% a partially synergistic or synergistic (5.4%) inhibition was observed. Antagonism occurred in only 0.4% of all strains. The combination of cephacetrile-gentamicin was slightly superior to the combination with amikacin, sisomicin and tobramycin respectively. The cephacetrile-aminoglycoside combination had a greater additive, partially synergistic or synergistic effect on Proteus strains than on Klebsiella and E. coli. In 56% of the enterococci strains, an additive or partially synergistic effect was observed.
