Summary
Cerebrospinal fluid was investigated in a case of infantile amaurotic idiocy (Tay-Sachs' disease) and in eight “normal” cases as to the occurrence of gangliosides by means of thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that gangliosides of the tetrasaccharid type are normal constituents of the cerebrospinal fluid. Tay-Sachs ganglioside (ganglioside G0) was found in the cerebrospinal fluid of the Tay-Sachs patient. The assay of gangliosides in the cerebrospinal fluid might be a useful tool in the diagnosis of diseases showing impaired ganglioside metabolism.
