Summary
In individuals with elevated plasma triglyceride level the intravenous infusion of triglycerides (2 ml/min of a 20 % fat emulsion for 2 hours) resulted in a significantly higher increase of the plasma triglyceride pool than in normals. 2 hours after the end of the infusion, in the individuals with normal plasma triglyceride level the concentration of plasma triglycerides has nearly returned to the level before starting the infusion, while in the hyperlipaemics at this time the plasma triglyceride concentration was still significantly above the level before the start of the infusion. In all individuals investigated the infusion of the fat emulsion was followed by a significant increase of the activity of endogenous lipoprotein lipase; no significant difference in the liberation of lipoprotein lipase activity could be demonstrated between the individuals with normal plasma triglyceride level and the hyperlipaemics.
