Summary
The binding of Na+ and Ag+ to poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a function of the degree of neutralizationα′ was studied by potentiometric titration in solutions without additional salt. Great attention was paid to problems of measurement. The pNa-measurements were carried out in a flow-through cell with a new type of a liquid membrane ion-selective electrode. For the pAg-measurements an electrode of metallic silver was used. It was found that Ag+ is bound more strongly to both polyacids than is Na+. At medium degrees of neutralization the activity of Ag+ decreases in spite of increasing concentration. In the case of PAA with Ag+ as counterion an unexpectedly broad step is observed in the titration curve. Moreover the apparent strength of the acid nearly reaches the value of acetic acid. The findings are compared with those previously published. Further, the nature and causes of cooperative conformational transitions are discussed.
