Summary
Serum glucose and inorganic phosphorus were determined by two different procedures, one without protein percipitation, while the other used protein-free filtrates. By comparison, the glucose and phosphorus levels in the latter were found to be approximately 5% higher than in the untreated plasma. This difference arises from the volume occupied by the protein which diminishes the volume of the filtrate and so increases the concentrations of the solutes. Mathematical consideration of the volume displacement effect of proteins revealed a formula on the basis of which the increase in concentration can be calculated when the concentration and the partial specific volume of the protein are known. The experimental data obtained from glucose and phosphorus determinations permit the estimation of the partial specific volume of total proteins in serum.
