Summary
Report of five cases of toxic hepatosis following Halothane anesthesia, two of which died under the symptoms of hepatic insufficiency.
The contradictory statements concerning a hepatotoxicity of Halothane are discussed. They may be explained by the idea of Halothane acting upon the liver only facultatively or in patients with a special disposition.
The term „toxic hepatosis“ is defined and discriminated from liver damages of other origin.
Despite the indefinite clinical symptomatology of liver damage caused by Halothane the morphological appearances — correlated with the patients history — seem to be typical. Histological evaluation by liver biopsy is usually possible. There are pointed out the difficulties of morphological differential diagnosis later in the course of the liver disease.
