Additional information

In my paper “Scenic Significance in the Work of Herrand von Wildonie” (Neophilologus 54 (1970) 142–148) ftn. 27 I refer to a forthcoming paper of mine „Helmbrehte(le)s tumpheit”. Before the latter paper could appear it was overtaken by the publication of a paper by Bernhard Sowinski, „Helmbrecht der Narr”,PBB(W) 90 (1968) 223–242, which expresses a view of Wernher der Gartenaere's didactic narrative similar to my own, notwithstanding differences in the interpretation of details. I therefore saw myself compelled to rewrite my paper to see what I thought was still worth saying after the publication of Sowinski's paper. This paper is the result of this exercise.

For a complete list of (recent) secondary literature up to 1968 on this work I refer to the bibliography in Hanns Fischer, Studien zur deutschen Märendichtung. Tübingen, 1968 (quoted below as Fischer, Studien). No. 139, p. 368–373, which now, together with that of Kurt Ruh in the eighth edition (ATB 11. Tübingen 1968), supersedes all other bibliographies on the subject. To bring these up to date I add here the other papers besides Sowinski's paper that have appeared since: Bruno Friedrich Steinbruckner, „Dichter und Schauplatz des Helmbrecht”, Euphorion 62 (1968) 378–384; Günter Lange, „Das Gerichtsverfahren gegen den jungen Helmbrecht. Versuch einer Deutung nach dem kodifzierten Recht und den Landfriedensordnungen des 13. Jahrhunderts', ZfdA 99 (1970) 222–234. Quotations and line references are taken from the eighth edition of the text by Kurt Ruh.
