Summary
The urinary excretion of total 17-ketosteroids, of fractionated 17-ketosteroids, of estrogens and of testosterone was determined in 3 castrates and in 3 cases of primary hypogonadism. Total 17-ketosteroid excretion was slightly decreased in one case only, etiocholanolone excretion in two cases; in two other cases the latter was low but not below the normal limit. Androsterone excretion was near the inferior limit of normal range in four cases. In two cases estrone excretion was slightly decreased and estradiol excretion rather low, but within the normal range. Testosterone excretion, however, was decreased to approximately 30% of the normal mean value and was in all cases substantially below the normal range. It would seem therefore that at present the determination of testosterone excretion in urine is the best available laboratory method for ascertaining leydig-cell insufficiency.
