Summary
A simple method for the determination of staphylococcus anti-α-hemolysin (AStaL) in serum usable in the clinical laboratory is described. This method employs a stable standard antigen in dried form and an antiserum standardized to international units.
Our experiments with serum from blood donors produced results which agree well with the normal values given in the literature ranging from 0.2–2.0 IE/ml.
Typical staphylococcus infections, such as osteomyelitis and staphylococcus sepsis, give the highest titers. The significance of this reaction for rheumatic diseases was shown from experimental results obtained by testing more than 1300 patients with joint and spinal column diseases. The reaction is especially interesting in cases of Morbus Bechterew, as almost 40% have an elevated AStaL-titer. Rheumatoid arthritis shows also a relatively high percentage of positive reactions.
