Summary
The present investigation if a report of research dealing with three adults, one of thich showed practically no galactose resorption (complete malabsorption), while two others showed a strongly reduced resorption (incomplete malabsorption). Previously reported cases of monosaccharide malabsorption were combined glucose-galactose malabsorption (8 infants and 1 adult). None of the cases in this report suffered from gastrointestinal symptoms either as infants or at a later age. Also, there were no other demonstrable clinical symptoms. In the one case of incomplete galactose malabsorption, the galactose resorption rate was determined. The amount resorbed with an oral dosage of 40 g galactose was 24%, with an intraduodenal dose, 45%, and with an oral dose of 40 g galactose +40 g glucose, 17% of the administered dosages. Both patients with incomplete galactose malabsorption showed a normal glucose resorption. The renal threshhold for galactose appeared to lie somewhere around a blood galactose level of 10 mg-%.
